Already Looking Forward to Spring!

I wasn't able to get out as much as I would have liked this January! The mild weather to this point was a blessing, and a few of the guys really took advantage of the stellar winter fishing opportunities. I just wanted to put a quick note out on the coming spring season. Our guide schedule is really starting to fill up for both March and April, if you are looking to get out this spring, please put your trip dates in as soon as possible to insure that your requested days are available. If you need to ask a few questions or need more info, please use the easy online trip request form Here. We look forward to seeing many of our regulars again this spring, and welcome the opportunity to fish with all who are interested in catching Lake Erie Steelhead on the fly.

Over the next couple of weeks we will be adding several new fly tying tutorials to our Fly Tying Blog. It's only a matter of time before we all have some phase of cabin fever to combat, so we are hoping the tutorials will be useful and somewhat of a quick escape. We will also be changing focus on the online fly shop to offer an array of new steelhead streamer patterns. Now that winter is officially here, we will be working on some long over due projects, and will return focus to this blog with better weather and spring nearing. First of all, our apologies for the disappearance of the latest post. For some reason unbeknownst to us, a technical difficulty took place and absolutely blew up the latest post highlighting our destination trip to Alaska and Chile.

That's A Wrap for 2011!

Well, it's hard to imagine another year has come and gone, but just a few more days and 2011 is a wrap! With the mild fall and early winter we are having, many rivers are fishing extremely well and providing some great opportunities for fish on a swung fly!

Before the calendar rolls another year on us, I wanted to share a few photos from my recent trips. Thanks to all of the SAO clients who came out and fished with us this year. Whether you are are old friends or new, it was a pleasure spending time with you all on the water this year.

With the season coming to an end, it is often times the chance for the guides to make up for lost time with friends and family. This time of year, I love to grab the gun and go for birds of one kind or another. If I can't find a pheasant or grouse, then waterfowl will always do. This year, I have had the awesome opportunity to share this love with my best friend and my oldest son. Some great memories have been made and many more are yet to come!

the flank feathers have been plucked and stored for later fly tying purposes.

Regardless of what you choose to do this time of year, make sure to find time to do it with family and close friends! Someone told me not long ago, that a man never lays on his death bed wishing he would have spent more time working...instead he wishes he would have spent more time with those he loved. I hope that you have done that this year. If not, the new year is just around the corner...make the most of it and hopefully you will have memories to cherish because of it.

BAM's Swingin' Rig for Steelhead Alley

The idea for this post isn't original; the inspiration comes from the Deneki Outdoors blog that I visit frequently. For those of you who are looking for some product reviews, true expert rigs, and knowledge on all other things spey, you should definitely take a peek - www.deneki.com. Consider this an attempt to cover a fraction of what's discussed in that link, for our area.

What follows is a breakdown of my two-handed set up that you'll find me fishing day in and day out on the Erie tributaries. Like most things spey, this rig is based largely on personal preference, which I'll get into a bit later in the post.

The Summary:

- Scott Arc 1196

- Rio Skagit Flight 475

- Nautilus NV 11/12 with spey spool

The Details

- 30 pound gel spul dacron backing attached to the spool with an arbor knot.

- SA Dragon Tail shooting line attached to the backing with a loop to loop connection. Tie a bimini twist to create a loop in your backing. Double over the end of the non-looped side of the shooting line and secure into a loop using two nail knots. Loop these two ends together with a "handshake connection." The DragonTail helps with loop stabilization. Although it doesn't shoot as far as mono, on our rivers rarely is it necessary to shoot more than 40 to 50 feet of line, so distance isn't an issue.

- Rio Flight 475 looped to running line using factory loops on both ends.

- 10 ft. Rio MOW Tips in medium (T-11) and heavy (T-14) weights; the 5 ft. floating/5ft. sinking, and 2.5 ft. floating/7.5 ft. sinking tips should cover most swinging applications in this area.

- 12 inch section of 20 lb. Rio Max plus mono, with a double surgeons loop on both ends.

- 18 inches of fluorocarbon tippet, looped to heavy mono with another double surgeons loop.

- Articulated fly attached to tippet using a non-slip mono loop.

The Commentary

- At 11'9", the Arc is a great length for fishing the larger Lake Erie tributaries. The rod is a true two hander and features a full second grip. The downside? This rod isn't made anymore. Other "short and light" spey rods can fill this role.

- With a medium action and a 475 grain line, short casts still allow for lots of feel and load through the rod. The Flight is able to turn over a wide variety of tips making it a great choice for many different rivers and water conditions in our area.

- Fighting fish on a 6 wt. is really, really, really fun.

- When swinging this time of year with a Skagit line, be prepared to break a lot of ice out of your guides because of the amount of stripping required when preparing for your next cast.

- Make the fly look alive, then hang on...

Get out there, swing a bug, and hope for a tug!

After a lot of prodding and poking from Greg, Pat and the rest of Guys at SAO I've finally got off my butt and decided to put together a few blogs in the off season. My first will be some close-up photography of some mayflies that I have studied over the years.

The next few will feature Duns, Spinners, Nymphs and maybe some emergence sequences if you aren't to sick of seeing bugs by then! I have been taking pics of bugs for many years and now I'm going to open up my archives and share some cool stuff with all of you.

Most people that I fish with always ask me about my photos and my time spent off the water, here's the fruit of my labor. I'm going to keep my "bug blogs" simple and not get into the "exact science" but, focus on the artistic beauty of these Ephemeral creatures.

I just love the way they seem to always be looking back at me, when I look at them thru the camera's eye! And the power that they have over a big wild brown.......how can something so small be such a strong magnet for both Fisherman and fish.

The Fast & The Furious

Fast and furious seems to be fitting as a title for this fall's steelhead season. We have been fortunate to have decent precipitation but not too much (until recently) and new fish have come in with every push of water. So, at times the water has been fast and the fish furious and on other days it has been fast fish and furious waters....either way, its been fun!

For many this fall the rain has meant very good days on the water, while for others it has been a true day of fishing. Any way you slice it though, aren't they all good days....really? I can't tell you how often I hear guys say, "Oh, the fish are just a bonus...I just like getting out!" It seems that the older I get, the more I am slowing down and understanding the depth of that truth. Sometimes it is more the fellowship with friends in a gorgeous setting that really makes the day...afterall, a big fish caught alone just doesn't have the same impact as one shared with a friend.

Fortunately, I have some friends I get to share these kinds of things with and on regular occasion I get to see others share with their friends the experience we know as Steelhead Alley. We are very fortunate to be on these kind of waters and make memories with so many great people. Here are just a few photos from my last three or four weeks.

Currently the water is up and away, but we hope to be fishing again later in the week. Hot flies lately have been Chicken Littles, Bob's Minnows, Buggers of varying colors, Smurf Stones, Ice Man Minnows and various eggs in brighter colors in heavy flows and pale pastels on clearing water. No matter what you use, change up if you can't seem to find what they want.

FAMILY, FRIENDS AND MEMORIES!

Everyday I spend on the water leads to a new experience or a "deeper understanding". It is my realization that sometimes we get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. At times it seems that time in and of itself escapes us. But, in a fleeting moment we decide to just breathe, slow down, and take it all in. Weeks, days and mere moments go by and create something quite special. You see, memories are made sometimes through our own accord and sometimes by happenstance. But, it is these memories that fuel our minds and feed our desires for life. During the past few weeks I had the opportunity to be apart of family and friends who decided to slow down and enjoy some time on the water. I thank all of you for the good times and memories........

Very proud dad + fun-loving son + great fishing conditions = UNBELIEVABLE DAY! They say "memories last a lifetime" and I can assure you that a few were made on Saturday. 5 Yr old Georgie (yep.... 5 yrs old) totally "blew my mind" last week, for lack of a proper phrase. I had a few reservations and they were met head-on by the anxious and tenacious young lad. I spoke with George Sr., the night before the trip and he had said that he understood this was not easy fishing, but Georgie was not your average boy. "He fishes almost every day" expressed a proud father, and he is "ready to go."

This was dad's best of the day.

No Comment Needed...

Georgie was convinced that he could hold his own fish...

Simply Priceless...

There is a large lump in my throat while I construct this post. I am taken back to my boyhood days on the water with my father, and the memories are sweet. It's About Time!

Well we finally got some of that fall precipitation that seemed to be avoiding the alley the past few weeks. The high flows should flush out the majority of the leaves and debris that have been creating havoc with our flies! Most everyone is also looking forward to seeing a fresh push of Lake Erie Steelhead as well, and at least a short end to the low, clear water fishing conditions over the past few weeks...

Looks like the Ohio Tributaries will be off line for the next few days, with the PA Tributaries dialing in possibly as soon as tomorrow. Cold temps and snow showers are right around the corner! Here are a few pics from this week.

When In Doubt.....

Anyone interested in a rain dance? I looked it up and found a few interesting, and very entertaining rain rituals...but I think we all employed a few other tactics to combat the conditions of late. All things considered, It has been a "technical" few days on the water, but the challenge has made the victories sweet....

Locating the willing takers meant a lot of walking, persistence, and communication with the entire staff of guides. The rigging became seemingly more critical than usual, resorting to large hoppers for indicators, and size 16's in some instances for the dropper.

Happy Halloween! Looks like low and clear water conditions going into November... There are plenty of fish in the Lake Erie Tributaries, but a steady dose of rain would make fishing for them that much better, and we could use a few more good pushes of fresh fish from Lake Erie to make it good fall season. Time to tighten those laces on your boots, because hiking to find willing and unpressed fish is on the horizon... I still believe the best fall fishing is still to come!

Productive flies have been # 8-10 white Woolly Buggers, Ice Man Minnows, and Chicken Littles. #12-14 Sucker Spawns and Micro Nukes in various shades of Orange, pink, and peach. Size #12 nymphs with small rubber legs have also been effective.

We are on the water daily and at times are finding it tough to get to the phone until our trips are completed, please leave me a message and I will call you back after 5pm each evening.

Chagrin River Outfitters now carries just about every custom fly we use daily while guiding on Lake Erie. Eggs, nymphs, buggers, and swung fly streamers all custom created by us are available daily at the shop.

All I can say is this...I love it when conditions agree with clients plans. I don't know about others experiences, but I know the disappointment when you book a guide only to show up and have blown out conditions, or the birds aren't flying when you booked the hunt...it is a big let down. Well, today was no such day, and I have to say that I revel in the excitement of days like this.

Leon and Jamie were both first time Steelheaders, each looking for that explosive experience that they had both heard about. As their good fortune would have it, the fish were there, were being very cooperative and were eager to please.

Congrats guys on a great day and first fish!

A Father Knows Best

Every now and then, the rivers rise, fish pour in, and nobody can go fishing when the waters are hot on the Alley. I know that sounds bad, but that is called life for many people in today's hustle and bustle of society.

Yesterday was just such a day. I knew the conditions were going to dial in, so I started the task of calling my regular clients to let them know that conditions would be great. After exhausting all my possible leads and not finding a single soul that could break away for the day, it was time for a father to make a call.

I have children as many of us fly fishers do and just like many other fathers, I too would love to pass my passion for this sport on to them. That being the case, there was only one thing left to do. With trumpet fanfare, I announced to my two oldest children (ages 10 & 12) that they would not be going to school tomorrow. That statement was met with a bit of confusion that quickly turned to excitement when I told them what the plans were for the following day. I'm not sure why such excitement...but I suspect it had something to do with no school and fishing with Dad.... :) In that moment, one thing was certain...there was no arguing but only an attitude of father knows best!

Knowing that they were pulling very solid grades, I wasn't really worried about them missing some school for time with Dad. My daughter had been out a handful of times with me and hooked up on some fish, but that first piece of steel had continued to elude her instead leaving her only with lessons learned. With that being the case, the first and most important order of business for our time together was to get my girl a fish!

It wasn't long after hitting the water that all of her fortune changed. With the skill of a seasoned angler, she made a cast exactly where I told her the fish would be holding and the rest she handled with a very cool hand. Moments later, this Dad got to share in a memory he will cherish for a lifetime!

When the going gets tough.......Strip a Woolly Bugger!

Conditions as of yesterday were extremely tough. Low, gin clear water makes for a long day dealing with spooky fish. But, as of this writing, the river flows are slowly climbing with today's rain and I expect the PA flows to be well sustained over the next couple of days with the pending forecast!

With that being said, back to the fish. Long, somewhat stealthy casts were the ticket to entice leery chrome. Stripping woolly buggers across isolated pockets and deep pools triggered quite a few follows and some pretty exciting strikes! The trick was not to alert them to your presence to quickly.

The Lake Erie Tributaries are getting pretty skinny in both Ohio and PA. There is rain on the horizon, but nothing significant is forecasted until at least Thursday night. By now most of the steelhead that were brave enough to enter the streams have become extremely spooky with no place to hide. The fishing will get better toward the end of the month, and hopefully we see enough water to flush out the yearly leaf hatch, and sustain a great fall run.

First, OCBS will be holding it's annual fall steelhead expo.

Now for a quick fishing report...

Life's a beach!

On the metalhead front things are looking up. The past few doses of rain have got some fish moving up the tributaries, with some fish being caught surprisingly far upstream for this time of year. With any luck, we'll keep getting this precipitation and our fish will continue to spread out nicely and set us up for a great fall. Despite the amount rain we've had, the window of opportunity for prime fishing conditions on the rivers this time of year is pretty small. With that said, anglers that hit it just right can be rewarded with some great early season fishing. If you're interested in getting out for some early season steelhead, let us know. We have guides available, and there's no better time of year to catch chromers at the absolute peak of their physical condition.

Anglers have also been experiencing some sporadic success fishing the beaches and river mouths along steelhead alley. Keep a close eye on weather/wind conditions, and fish early and late. Hot flies have been baitfish patterns in white, olive, blue, grey, and silver with a moderate amount of flash.

It's about that time of year...

Summer is winding down, and for the more matter-of-fact folks a quick glance at the calendar will tell you that it's already over. The staff has still been out fishing and working, though, and I think I speak for all of us in saying that we're starting to get the steelhead itch now that we've had a few cool nights and the fish are starting to show up.

SAO guide John Miller has been up to his usual tricks on the Delaware, and with some higher flows, and a little bit of color in the water column the fish have been eager to oblige.

It's always tough for me to leave Wyoming, and when the guide season was as good as this past one, it makes it all the more difficult. September out there is by far my favorite month - shorter days, and pretty damn cold nights are a telltale sign that summer is over. Guide and fish alike take notice, and both try to act on it quickly because both the fishing, and the weather, are just too good to last for very long.

I spent my last day out there fishing with my girlfriend; over the past few years we've been dating she's become quite the fly fisherwoman. We fished a special section of stream surrounded by the spectacular red rock walls which the rancher who owns the place calls "the best fence man or God ever made." The fish are plentiful, and they've been known there to pounce on a properly presented dry. As my girlfriend made her first cast, not one, not two, not three, but a half dozen fish took a pass at her hopper as it drifted along an undercut bank. She set the hook on the last one, and looked at me and smiled after it found the bottom of the net. It was looking like it was going to be one of those days you remember for a long time.

The last fish I hooked was the biggest I'd ever seen on this particular stream. As we made our way up into the canyon section of the property, we came across a deep eddy, carved out of the solid rock wall that lined the canyon. On previous occasions I'd seen a big fish in there, but we'd never managed to hook him. My first cast landed in a pile of foam way right against the wall. A quick flick of the wrist sent my hopper skittering out of the foam, and heading towards the current seam along the eddy. It never made it. The enormous brown exploded on the big foam fly, and came out of the water with gills flared and head shaking. After what seemed like an eternity, but in reality was little more than ten seconds, he dove to the bottom, and sawed off my tippet on one of the many boulders that lined the pool.

There isn't much to say after getting your butt kicked by a fish like that. Only one thing came to mind as I reeled my line in through my guides and started trudging back to the car...see you next year, pal.

If I had to describe this years trip to Alaska, I would have to say it was awesome! We hosted 20 angler's into camp again this year, with many of them experiencing Alaska for the first time! Everything from Rainbow Trout, Grayling, Char/Dollies, Lake Trout, Sockeye, and Silver Salmon were brought to hand over the course of the week.

The guys flew out to several world class destinations such as the Ugashik Narrows, Contact Creek, and the Moraine, while the boat trips across the lake to the Brooks River and Margot Creek offered up outstanding fishing as usual. Combine the good fishing with the Alaskan scenery, bear sightings, and river side accommodations, and you were hard pressed to ask for anything more...

A special thank you to all of the angler's who traveled with us, and to the Johnson family & staff at Naknek River Camp for another great trip! We have already taken several bookings for our return to Alaska in 2012. The dates will be August 18th thru the 25th. We made it back home after a brutal red eye flight schedule! Shortly we will have a series of blogs put together from our hosted trip to Alaska. It was absolutely a great time, and each year we travel to Alaska there is always something new going on... I spent most of the trip with switch rod in hand, and getting my casting dialed in for upcoming Lake Erie steelhead runs.

We will also list several great tying events and shows coming up around the region, and in the shop to get you ready for the start of the fall. Stay tuned for more in the next couple of days!

Alaska's Awesome Scenery!

Over the past 3 years we have hosted 4 successful groups (over 70 anglers) to Alaska and Jim Johnson's Naknek River Camp to fish the peak of the Silver Salmon runs, and to chase beautiful Rainbow Trout and Char. We are really excited about this years trip, as we will be filming our groups entire Alaskan experience from start to finish. We will be out of the office from August 16th through August 30th, and I will return all emails and phone messages on my return.

Yes! The fall runs are right around the corner, but don't get to excited yet.... We will not see anything worth fishing in the Lake Erie Tributaries until early October.. If you noticed I said in the streams? In mid September start looking for Steelhead and Brown Trout on patrol and cruising the surf. The beaches in the east will be your best bet! Early mornings just at sun-up and the evenings after sun-set are the best times to pick up an early season chromer...Also look for good action just before and after storm fronts moving over the lake. Large fly patterns that imitate shad, emerald shiners, and goby are good choices.

I'm A Wanna-Be Trout Bum.....Part III

When I first started learning how to fly fish, all I dreamed about was catching trout in as many states as possible. I was mesmerized by Fly-Fisherman Magazine! I would cut out all the trout photos and put them in a journal of places and species I wanted to catch. Watching Joe Humphreys completely school Babe Winkleman with a fly rod in the mid 1980's on TV set my young mind into overload.

Today that urge is still as strong as the day I laid hands on my first Martin rod and reel combo from the local tackle shop. The cost was just $35.00, or to a young kid, about two weeks of mowing at five bucks a lawn. A week later I bought my first flies. That assortment was made up of the Muddler Minnow in standard and marabou versions, a few Montana Stone Fly nymphs (heck they were from Montana they gotta be good right?), a couple of Mickey Finns, and a pair of Adams and Elk Hair Caddis dry flies. In my mind I had finally become a fly fisherman! I just wish someone would have told me you needed to buy backing for your fly line, not to mention that you needed to secure your fly line to the reel?

My first "Trout" on the fly rod just happened to be a very large Elk Creek Steelhead, which proceeded to tear ass down stream and promptly take my entire fly line with it! This is the point where a young middle school aged boy looks downstream with a pretty big "WTF" grin on his face! Thankfully a gentleman fishing below me was able to retrieve my line, and out of kindness at least secured it to the reel...

Over the next 8 years Jason Gregory and I would ride our scooters, ten speeds, and mountain bikes to all the local steelhead tributaries and stocked trout streams in search of the next trout fix. Along the way we learned how to tie our own flies by detouring over to Folly's End Fly Shop for free fly tying classes with local legend Clyde Murray. I was on cloud nine, and in the best shape of my life, as a 10 mile bike ride was worth exploring rumors of a few small wild trout in a stream located in some farmers field in the middle of "BFE"! As we got older, possessed drivers licences, were able to fly, and we were able to explore streams that were always out of reach, I finally realized that my dreams were finally within my grasp! Always willing to learn and listen to rumors of big trout has now landed me in the west, and in honor of my youth and my childhood dreams I have been fortunate enough to have landed and released trout in 16 states. I only hope to complete this "Trout Bum" dream before it is too late.

Wyoming has become a very special stop for me! It's a fly fishing destination worthy of visiting every year, and holds the potential for stalling my goal of catching a trout in every state they still swim. The trout fishing, scenery, and people here in Wyoming are so inviting that it haunts my dreams when I am long gone. I guess dreams are for just that...

The North fork of the Powder River is a terrestrial insect haven. The undercut grassy banks, and willow sections of the stream offered exceptional dry fly fishing with big foam bodied flies. The splashy takes while drifting under the willows, or over sections of wood debris made me yearn for this type of action back home. Watching large trout track a dry fly out of a five foot deep pool, and eat the fly in reverse is what brings me back to these small waters. If my trout bum journey would have to end on these waters I would not be disappointed. Here are just a few of the Brown Trout we caught on that day.

Making Memories in the Salty Sun

Last week I had the good fortune of leaving the kids with Grandma and Grandpa and heading to the waters of the Atlantic in northern Florida. The primary purpose for getting away, was time with my beautiful bride, but when there is water and sun, we both have our own ideas of fun. She tends to be a sun goddess, while I, well, I think you understand! I need fish!

I had done some homework and came ready to fish for just about anything that I could get a chance at from fishing the surf to fishing the sound. Much to my dismay though, I arrived to find the beaches a very poor option for fishing sport fish of any kind on the fly. It was a good thing I brought the box of surf rigs with the rods to go along with it, because Whiting and small Sharks was all that was available.

With some shrimp, a couple of surf rods, some sand spikes for holding the rods and time to spare, I wore out the small Whiting and occasional shark from the beach. All in all it was really just a way of passing the time until the fly rod could be assembled and flies put into the air.

Prior to coming down, I had made some calls and sent some emails out to see if I could locate any contacts in the area. As I had read, the Amelia Island area was a great fishery for anything and everything given the time of year. What I was excited to hear though, was that Tarpon could be had...and good size Tarpon. As luck would have it, I was able to make contact with a fine guide and new friend, Jeff. Jeff Crumpton operates Amelia Island Charter Fishing and is an Orvis Endorsed Guide in the region. Given the nature of business in the area, he fishes both on the fly and with light tackle. He does however have a lot of experience fishing and guiding on the fly and spent a number of years with operations in West Virginia around the Elk River and Slaty Fork. He is a skilled fly casting instructor and has fished across the country and beyond for both fresh and saltwater species.

Jeff was a great aide in getting me out on the water in search of a few more personal firsts on the fly. If you are ever in the area, give him a shout and have him take you fishin'...you'll have a great time for sure. More on fishing with Jeff in a minute....

Before I could make it out with Jeff, I had some time to beat around the beach, get some sun, and try my hand at surf fishing with the bait rigs and surf rods. One thing was certain though...it didn't matter what rod was in my hand, all I could do was dream about that one fish that still haunts me....the silver king...the poon...the mighty Tarpon. Well, I guess one of two...can't forget that haunting Permit either.

At any rate, I spent some time on the beach and got a couple of more species of shark under my belt. I never got anything big, but I saw them for sure. Here are a few picks of what I caught within casting distance of the beach.

Hammerhead Sharks were also very present and typically

ran larger than the Black-tips. However, this as I have now

learned was not a Hammerhead, but a Bonnethead Shark...

learn something new every day! Interesting creatures to say the least!

Well, every chance that Jeff had (when he didn't have charters booked), he tried to get me out to experience the fishery he has come to love. His bread and butter in the area is Redfish (aka red bass, red drum, puppy drum) and they do abound. But like any fish, they can be elusive and finicky. Jeff loves to fish the flood tides for tailing reds and I can now say I know why. I love fishing flats and the spartina grass flats are awesome when the flood tides show up.

The first night I got out, Jeff took me to fish the flood tide. The problem was that we couldn't find any tailing fish. I had one shot at a Sheephead, but it quickly ended. We covered a lot of water and then at the final hour as the tide was starting to drop back, I spotted tails. With time running out and fish moving to the flats edges so as to not get caught out of water, I made my move. I wish I could say that my moves were well received, but I only had a matter of a few minutes before these fish gave me the fin and moved off the flat. It was a beautiful sight to see that spotted tail breach on the flat, and quite frustrating to have found it so late in the tidal movement. But....that is fishing!

The next day was the day I had been waiting on. It was my shot, hopefully, at Tarpon. While fishing the surf a couple days earlier, I had watched as a large "Poon" launched itself from the water a couple hundred yards off the beach. He was large and I had dreams of sticking one just like him.

Much to my dismay, Jeff and I ran miles and miles of beach and jetty looking for rolling fish and we just couldn't find them. Bait was scarce and therefore finding those beautiful fish was that much more difficult. Not to mention that a nuclear sub had just gone to sea earlier totally screwing up the fishing in one of the prime areas (not quite sure how to get around that one). After exhausting all the angles, we had to admit defeat and change tactics if we were to get the skunk off for the day. So, out of the big water and back to the sound we headed looking for anything from Specks, Blues, Reds, Sheephead, etc. If it would take a fly, we were looking for it and throwing to it.

As luck would have it, late in the day as we were looking for staging reds next to the grass flats, some fish moved in and starting cutting bait. I was in the cage on the front of Jeff's Ranger center console and had the fly in hand. All it took was one cast with a mullet imitation and BOOM! FISH ON! A couple minutes later I had a nice Speckled Trout in hand. In fact, it was my first fly caught Speckled Trout, so another species, check...

As the bait continued to rocket out of the water to escape the carnage beneath, I quickly returned my fly to the water. As I stripped the fly in, I had a huge swirl appear near my fly...it had been a near miss! I left the fly in the water and pulsed it one more time hoping for the return and sure enough, in a split second, my fly disappeared and the fish bulldogged for the bottom.

I don't know a lot about salt species, but I did know enough to know this was not a Speckled Trout on the end of my line. Instead, we quickly resolved that this was most likely a Bluefish. When the line came up and the fish came to hand, sure enough it was a face full of teeth. Bluefish were breaking bait on three sides of us and you couldn't cast fast enough.

Before it was all said and done....actually, before we pulled off to take one more shot at finding tailing Reds, I busted one more nice Speckled Trout...my nicest of the day.

One last time, the flood tide decided to roll up in the spartina grass and we were quick to follow in hopes of finding tails dancing in the waning light. The first flat that a friend pointed us to came up empty. However, fisherman's intuition quickly came into play and Jeff and I agreed that if fish were to be found, we would find them on an adjacent flat across the channel.

As the sun was quickly setting we rushed across the way to check the other flats. We pulled up and within thirty seconds had spotted a couple of tails. I wasted no time jumping out into the water and making my way across the flat. The pressure was on...I only had a few minutes of light remaining and one target out in front of me. With the tail in the air, I tried to get the fly on his nose. Time and again, it was short, left, right, fish moved, fish disappeared. The water was about knee deep, so the fish could disappear with ease...especially in low light. I continued scoping the remaining reflections of light looking for the silhouetted tail and at every sight, fired a cast in hopes of my first Red.

Much to my chagrin, that Redfish gave me the fin (again) and disappeared into the night. As I walked across the flat in the darkness, with my head held low in defeat, I realized how fortunate I was to be here...knee deep in water, ankle deep in mud, fly rod in hand, with fish on the flat. How many others would have swapped places given the opportunity? As I get older and experience more of what God has created around me, I am finding that it isn't always about catching the fish as it is the pursuit. I am blessed to have had the shots I had and a new friend to share it with.

In just a short time, Greg and I will be in Alaska looking for Salmon, big Bows, and one of our favorites, Arctic Char. Until then, I will be poking around looking for some Bass in Tennessee.

I'm A Wanna-Be Trout Bum.....Part II

Driving toward the Red Fork of the Powder River, I felt like a big'ole fat Labrador sticking his head out the window and slobbering down the side of the jeep. At this point I didn't have a care in the world... I was just smiling! The history of this place is as intriguing as the wild trout that inhabit the water running through its red canyons.

Where we would be fishing is located in the middle of no-man's land between the towns of Sheridan, Kay-Cee, and Buffalo. It was here in these hills that the famous Butch Casity and the Sundance Kid would make their escape from deputies and local law enforcement after repeated robberies of the towns local banks, and by just looking at the terrain I could almost imagine how crazy the outlaw horses must have been during the chase, and why they were so successful at getting away!

by the fabled outlaws Butch Casity and the Sundance Kid.

The Red Fork of the Powder River ranges from a width of 20 to 40 feet, and is littered with runs and pools from 3 to 6 feet deep. The river banks are virtually all undercut several feet back providing excellent cover for holding trout. The area was also covered in bug life. Everything from caddis and golden stones, terrestrials such as ants, grasshoppers, and cicadas were also present and abundant.

Even during the heat of the day the water ran cold, and the rivers resident trout are always looking up... Big dry flies are the preferred offering here, and there is no need for a dropper! As long as the presentation was good the fish would eat. Foam flies such as Chubby Chernobyl's, Cartoon Hoppers, Foam Golden and Brown Stone flies, Chernobyl Ants, and Fat Albert's are a perfect choice. The Red Fork's clarity and size offers you an up close and action packed dry fly take, where you have the best front row seat to watch it all go down!

The Brown Trout here are spectacular fighters on fly tackle.

The orange markings on the Red Fork are some of the most vivid I have ever seen.

The Red Fork also boasts a healthy population of Rainbow Trout and Cut-bows. Even though the primary species where I was fishing seemed to be primarily Brown Trout, it was great to see the occasional Rainbow Trout or Cut-bow eat your fly and go completely airborne on the take.

caught on the Red Fork averaged 14- 16 inches, with several

opportunities at fish between 18-20 inches.

I'm A Wanna-Be Trout Bum.....Part I

I'm like most fly-fisherman, I constantly day dreaming about Steelhead taking a swung fly, or that big western Brown Trout gulping a Chubby Chernobyl off the surface in spectacular fashion. I desperately need to be a trout bum for at least a short period of time before I loose my mind... Of all the things one can be addicted too like drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and porn, I choose fly fishing as my everyday high, a way to maintain my sanity, a short release from responsibility, and a special balance in my life. Without fly fishing I would not be the person I am today... Thankfully my dealer came through and my fly fishing fix this summer would come just in a nick of time!

The first time I seen the Big Horn Mountain Range I took it for granted... The second time around I spent as much time as I needed while taking in the spectacular scenery. Not only is it an amazing sight, you feel at peace, and are able to think about all the important things happening in your life.

My trout bum week would take me to Saddlestring, Wyoming to the HF Bar Guest Ranch and the home of Rock Creek Anglers. As some of you know- fellow steelhead guide Brett McCrea makes the HF Ranch his summer home and provides seasonal guide services for RCA.

A welcome sign for any angler looking for the opportunity to fly fish for big and wild trout!

I have seen or visited nearly a 100 fly shops across the nation, most of them in there own right are really great shops that carry the latest of everything and anything available from the fly fishing industry. The only problem is you really don't feel like you are anything more than just a customer. When I stepped into the fly shop & bar at Rock Creek Anglers I felt like I was in the company of anglers, guys who live the trout bum life, and more importantly guys who excepted and welcomed the intrusion of a Wanna- Be like myself... Not only did Rock Creek Anglers have what you needed in gear, they treated you like you where apart of there family, and as a welcomed, and long lost fishing buddy who has finally come home.... It's a special place and I feel extremely fortunate to have been there! Just take a look at the fly shop and bar in the next three photos, and if you can't understand where I am coming from, you should seriously consider getting your eyes checked....

The fly fishing RCA provides can be summed up with this phase. It will be the best western dry fly fishing you can possibly imagine for big and wild trout! This was the second year I have fished with RCA and the dry fly action and trout fishing seems only to get better every year. Put it this way- the week was fishgasmic and I will need at least 3 blog entries just to get it out of my system! Here are just a few shots to nibble on until the next entry...

A River Runs Through It and Then...

In 1992 the fly fishing industry received a huge shot in the arm. It was called Robert Redford and "A River Runs Through It!" I can't tell you how many conversations I have had with people while on the water who say, "I started fly fishing after I saw the movie, A River Runs Through It." It's like the world of fly fishing can be separated by BTM and ATM....before the movie and after the movie.

Well, no more. I believe that the next shot in the arm is taking place right now and in a couple years we are going to start hearing a different story. In the last month, The Orvis Company has started a campaign that spans the country to help bring people into this wonderful sport. In recent weeks, here in Ohio and all across the country, Orvis stores as well as affiliate shops have been offering "Fly Fishing 101 & 201" classes. Several of us here at Steelhead Alley Outfitters have had the opportunity to be involved in these classes and they have been very well attended. Thanks to Orvis, fly shops, and a lot of volunteers, thousands of people are being introduced to this awesome sport!

Guides Brett McCrae and John Miller are both respectfully chasing the most beautiful Brown Trout our country has to offer. I'm always jealous when the fish photos from these guys start showing up in my email! I have had the pleasure of fishing both the West Branch of the Delaware River on the East, and Wyoming's Piney Creek in the West. The trout are spectacular and the scenery is stunning, I only wish I had more spare time in my schedule.

After spending the last couple of months enjoying Northwestern PA trout fishing, it was awesome to come back to my home water- Lake Erie Tributaries! Over the past couple of days I have the pleasure of stalking beautiful Lake Erie Smallmouth Bass with Patti, Meredith, and John who made the summer trip up from Indianapolis. Long cast and small flies were productive for us the majority of the time, with opportunities in the morning and late evenings for top water and big streamer action.

We all put in the extra work perfecting on our always in style farmer tans, and ended the trip with a feast of pizza, wings, and deep fried soft pretzels from Mike's Sports Bar in Lake City, PA. If you are looking to get out we have a few limited days available. If you plan to get out on your own, stalking, long leaders, and even longer casting is required to catch a few of the bruisers cruising the shallows.

Olive, Black, Brown, and Gray BH Woolly Buggers in sizes 10 through 6 were the most effective flies the past few days. Here are a few of the pictures from the past couple of days!

Over the past 60 days, I can honestly say it was probably the most enjoyable Spring I have ever personally had! There was alot of water, everything from Yellow Sallies, Black Caddis, Sulphurs, Green Drakes, and Rusties in the evening- just a ton of bugs everyday.... Our last retreat of the season was hosted with Jim Lampros of Orvis Cleveland and it was really good times had by all! Thanks for closing out the season on a great note! A Much Needed Fly Fishing Retreat...

Over the past 11 days Mike Schultz and I hosted 3 groups of anglers up to our Brook Trout Retreat for a little fly fishing R&R. The bugs were popping everyday, the guys were awesome, and the fishing was good! We look forward to seeing you all again in the near future! Here a a few of the photos, I think they will tell the story better than I can!

Smallies...But Not Really!

Every year with the winding down of Steelhead season, as we say our goodbyes, hello's to another fanciful gamefish are heard. It is no secret that many a warmwater fisherman would rather pursue Smallmouth Bass than anything else. They are feisty little fish, or are they. With the warming weather, the trees start to leaf out and the forest floor blankets itself with wildflowers and morels...the signs of spring are here and the snow has gone at least for a little while.

All of our tributaries on the Alley have resident populations of Smallmouth Bass, but these aren't what really tickle my fancy. Instead it is the lake dwelling cousins that come in river to visit family that peaks my interest. These fish start moving in starting in late April, and by mid-May are often in prespawn mode. A few days ago, SAO guide Ben Barger and myself decided to get out for a day for ourselves. The fishing has been very good when you can get on the stream, but the rains have made it tough! Nevertheless, when we went out, we hit it right and capitalized.

All of our fish came swinging big sculpins on lighter weight rods in the dropping and clearing flows. Man was it fun to watch the light rods double over under the weight of these brutes.

Time and again, the rods bent and we were glad to watch it happen. Below, it was Ben's turn once again and I was there to grab a couple of shots of the moment.

Now, of course I didn't want to miss out on too much of the fun, so I got to swinging the waters as well and time and again, we came up with beautiful pre-spawn females full of fight and many jumps to boot!

her, the belly still spilled out of my hand.

All in all it was a great day! We had a blast and I think the photos show it. When I get a chance to put together some short film (no frills) I will post it. We did shoot a couple minutes that is good for bringing a bit more life to the action...so stay tuned.
